Within these works the use of tiki or human form to expresses our relationship with the constellation Matariki. Matariki refers to the narrative were Tamanui-te-ra (the sun) is at his weakest point in the solar system. Matariki gathers her six daughters Tupua-Nuku, Tupua-Rangi, Waiti, Waita, Waipuna-a-Rangi and Ururangi to support the weak sun back toward the southern oceans.

These poupou have embellishments that adorn particular parts of the body from the head to the feet. The head is adorned with Moko, Potae and Rau Huia which highlight the tapu nature of the head as the repository of knowledge.

The sneakers positioned on the poupou feet act as pouwhenua and are a reminder to ‘walk the talk’. The text on the tongues of the shoes speak as they carry us forward in today’s changing urban world.
